8/1 - A Restaurant Ruined My Life

"I was Don Quixote. I was chasing a windmill. I didn’t see the obstacles in my way."

Robert Maxwell, photographed by Dave Gillespie for Toronto Life

With zero experience running a professional kitchen, home cook Robert Maxwell poured his life savings into his passion project: a gastropub-inspired Toronto restaurant. It became a crash-course in coping with stress, managing his cashflow, and curbing his ego.

In this funny, forthright interview with Olly, Robert reveals how chasing a dream led to him selling his house, hitting the bottle and falling out of love with the thing he loved the most... cooking.

LISTEN NOW:

Meanwhile, in this week’s Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart considers whether or not he is a B.U.M.M.E.R after reading Jaron Lanier’s new book, Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now.

The Beech Tree, Robert's restaurant, is still open in Toronto - under new management

Elsewhere, down The Foxhole, Alix Fox - fresh from co-hosting Radio 1’s new podcast Unexpected Fluids - advises a Mann-fan on the best techniques for couples to get jiggy… when you’re both fat.

7/4 - Anatomy of a Movie Trailer

"We are going to lie to you, if we really have to. We have to get you to come to the cinema"

Why are movie trailers more beloved and enduring than other forms of advertising?

How has the medium changed, to keep the video-game generation engaged? And what tricks do editors use to keep us watching, and returning to the flicks, week in week out?

In this episode, editor Gareth Davies sits down with Olly to review some classic examples of the genre, and provides a masterclass in how to market a movie - from the choice of soundtrack, to navigating plot spoilers, and defining the right pace.

Listen Now:

You can watch all the trailers discussed in the interview - Rear Window, Alien, Three Kings, A Serious Man and The One I Love - here:

4/5 - The Quiet Ones

"You're silent on the surface - but you're incredibly noisy in your head"

From Morrissey to Laurence Olivier, public figures through history have channelled shyness and stage-fright into their work. But is shyness a useful tool - or is uninhibited confidence a better way to navigate the modern world?

In this episode, social and cultural historian Joe Moran talks to Olly about the implicit difficulty of silence, the internal monologues that plague him in social situations, and how shy people can weaponise irony, distance and aloofness to their advantage...
