14/10 - Return To Sender: The Post Office Scandal Revisited

“I am still trying to hold down a job, a day job, while I'm doing all of this. "

LISTEN: Apple // Spotify // Google // MP3 // RSS // TuneIn

After twenty years, Kamran Ashraf is still seeking justice.

Wrongfully sent to prison by the Post Office, he and his family are one of 700 subpostmasters and sub postmistresses convicted on false evidence - provided by a broken computer system known as Horizon.

Three years after our original interview, we discover what happened next - was his appeal successful? And what will it take to see justice for the hundreds of people affected?

The ‘Horizon scandal’ has since been described as one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in recent British legal history. You can discover more at postofficetrial.com.

Our thanks to journalist Nick Wallis for connecting us with Siema and Kam. In the original story, we changed their names to protect their appeal for justice.

Meanwhile, in the Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart has spent the month avoiding Ultra Processed Foods, using The Nova Scale.

Some of Ollie’s experiments with a ‘Mediterranean diet’ in Portugal. Yep.

From sausages to cornichons, Ollie takes us through the things some experts think we should remove from our diet - and reveals a few surprising omissions along the way.

But is the science all it’s cracked up to be, when compared to a liberal dash of salt on a home-cooked meal? And how much of a trend is it really? The Zeitgeist investigates.

Elsewhere, in the Foxhole, Alix Fox conquers her very specific fear of diving near an airport - and then in our listener question of the month, advises a Mann-fan who has vestibulodynia, a condition that leads to chronic pain around the vagina. So how can she and her partner conceive a baby in the old-fashioned way?

With the help of The Vulva Pain Society, Alix discusses the fun of playing with insemination kits, and conception-friendly lubes like Conceive Plus and Pre Seed.

If you have a sex or relationship question you’d like Alix to answer, fill in the Feedback form. You can remain anonymous if you wish.

9/6 - The Face Detectives

Don’t you hate it when you forget a face?

Spare a thought for the 1.5 million people in the UK suffering from developmental prosopagnosia - facial blindness. In its most acute form, they’re unable to recognise their friends, their family… even their own reflection.

rachel bennetts.JPG

Dr Rachel Bennetts, psychology lecturer at Brunel University, specialises in researching facial processing disorders. In this fascinating interview with Olly, she explains what life is like for those who can’t follow the narrative of TV shows or recognise their colleagues - and why their brain is letting them down.

LISTEN NOW:

The Modern Mann team as painted by our artist-in-residence, Danny Mooney, who has prosopagnosia

Elsewhere this week, Ollie Peart tests out the latest home fitness trends in the Zeitgeist, including yoga-training app Asana Rebel, and on-demand fitness class Fiit. Plus, he updates us on his attempt to reach Christmas No.1. Can he get a record label to release ‘The Sounds Of Christmas’ in time for the festive charts?

Meanwhile, down the Foxhole, Alix Fox - fresh from handcuffing herself to a shower in the interests of bodily pleasure - considers a question of self-exhibitionism from a Mannfan who loves to share nudie pics. What are the risks he exposes himself to when he, um, exposes himself? And is there a safer way to get a thrill than using sites like Tumblr and Temporarily Exposed?

Finally, our record of the week comes from new girlband 303, and their track Whisper:

5/5 - Subliminal Criminal

Does the mind of a murderer look any different to yours?

Brain-Scan.jpg

Can brain-scanning technology help explain criminal activity? And if could - should that evidence be admitted into court?

Dr Lisa Claydon, Senior Lecturer in Law at the Open University, has spent decades considering these questions. In this fascinating interview with Olly, recorded at Cheltenham Science Festival, she explains the issues around neuroscience in the courtroom, from the problems of malingering and false memory syndrome to the sometimes dubious defence of ‘automatism’ used by murdering sleep-walkers...

LISTEN NOW:

Elsewhere this week, Ollie Peart explains why he’s getting emotional about a giant pig, how to get your favourite film back on the big screen, and the latest way to bring your Pornhub experience to life. And, in his quest to become a true trends insider, he attempts to enrol on to an elite dating app, and hitch a ride on a ‘parliamentary ghost-train’ with some real experts.

Meanwhile, down the Foxhole, Alix Fox reveals why an exfoliating sponge could become your bedroom essential, and answers a listener question about polyamory, with plenty of pointers for those seeking plenty of partners. Along the way, she translates much seemingly inpenetrable poly-lingo, explaining away ‘cowgirl’, ‘mono’, ‘frubbly feelings’, ‘metamores’ and ‘NRE’.

If you have a question of sex for next week’s show, just click our Feedback form. The Foxhole is sponsored by our superb sexual companions at MyCondom.com. They stock an incredible range of toys, lube and protection, including the On)Clinic non-lubricated condoms Alix highlights in this week’s show. Finally our song of the week is Albin Lee Meldau’s track ‘Persistence’, off his debut EP ‘Bloodshot’, released on the 21st July:
